With the effects of the economy still lingering, the Wisconsin State Department of Tourism is looking to further promote vacationing in Wisconsin to the neighboring states of Michigan and Illinois. With most vacation destinations accessible by one tank of gas or less, Wisconsin can be seen as an affordable alternative to longer trips:
To encourage these types of “staycations,” the Department of Tourism has geared its current marketing campaign — Picture the Fun — toward regional and statewide travelers, Fantle said.
This past year, 54 percent of travelers in the Badger State were Wisconsinites, according to an economic impact report released by the Department of Tourism and prepared by the Kennebunk, Maine-based Davidson-Peterson Associates research firm. The remaining travelers came from surrounding states, including northern Illinois, eastern Minnesota, western Michigan and Iowa, said Fantle.
