Civil War Sesquicentennial

2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Many events are being planned across the US in the next four years to commemorate the war. Although no major battles were fought here, Wisconsin still played a large part in the war. More than 91,000 men from Wisconsin fought and more than 12,000 died. Regiments from Wisconsin had a reputation as being excellent soldiers, and became some of the most decorated in the war.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the creation of a commission to coordinate Civil War events across Wisconsin.  The commission will help to coordinate efforts of museums, libraries, historical societies and veterans associations.

Learn more about this commission at the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs website or the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.
